Congratulations! You applied. You were accepted. Now it’s time to confirm your place.
Please thoroughly review all of the steps listed below and complete them as soon as possible. After being admitted, these steps can also be viewed in your account.
You’re just steps away from being an official Spartan! Here’s your checklist.
All admitted international students who plan to attend Michigan State University fall semester should reserve their place in the incoming class as soon as they have decided to enroll at MSU, but no later than May 1. International students planning to enroll for either the spring or summer semester should reserve their place within four weeks from the date of their admission. Complete the steps below to reserve your place at MSU.
All international students who plan to attend Michigan State University must submit the $250 Advanced Enrollment Deposit (AED). Submitting your deposit holds your place in the incoming class and allows you to register for a required New Student Orientation (NSO) date. Once you have successfully submitted your deposit online, you will be able to select an orientation date.
Deposit deadline
Freshman international students planning a fall semester enrollment should submit their deposit as soon as they have decided to enroll at MSU, but no later than May 1. MSU reserves the right to cancel your admission if you do not submit your deposit by May 1. Any freshman international student planning to enroll for either the spring or summer semester should submit the deposit within four weeks from the date of their admission.
Deposit refund
The deposit is refundable up until May 1 for freshman international students planning a fall semester enrollment. In order to receive a refund you must cancel your application in your account by clicking the “cancel application” button, after which MSU will automatically process a refund. Please note that the deposit is nonrefundable for freshmen enrolling for spring and summer semesters, as well as for all transfer students.
All international freshman students, with a few exceptions, are required to live in on-campus housing for the first four semesters they are enrolled at MSU.
After you have submitted your deposit which includes your $40 housing application fee, you will be able to log in to your My Housing account where you will acknowledge that your housing contract will be available to sign in March. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian will need to sign the contract as well. You should submit your deposit and sign your housing contract as soon as you decide to enroll at MSU, but no later than May 1.
In the spring you will receive more housing information, including requirements and deadlines, from MSU Live On. Be sure to regularly check your MSU email address for updates. Visit the MSU LiveOn website for more information about on-campus housing and to explore halls and neighborhoods that freshman students live in.
If you will be studying in the United States on an F-1 or J-1 student visa, you will need to upload a scan of your passport and show adequate proof of financial support in order for Michigan State University to issue you the appropriate documents to obtain a student visa (I-20 or DS-2019). Once you have received your I-20 or DS-2019 from MSU, you will need to apply for a student visa to study in the U.S.
